Cladrastis lutea (Cladrastis kentukea), also called gopherwood, yellowwood and Kentucky yellowwood, is one of the rarest native trees in the United States, according to the website Netstate. It grows in river valleys and moist woodlands in scattered areas across the eastern United States. Homeowners cultivate yellowwoods as ornamental specimens and shade or lawn trees.Cladrastis lutea trees grow approximately 30 to 50 feet tall with a 40- to 50-foot spread. They have smooth gray bark, short trunks, drooping, thorny branches and rounded crowns. Their pinnately-compound leaves are composed of between 7 and 9 bright-green, oval-shaped leaflets, each between 2 and 3 inches long, that alternate along a leaf stem. A large terminal leaflet grows from the end of the stem. The leaves change to a mixture of orange and yellow in the fall. Clusters of white blossoms appear during early summer, followed by flattened seed pods.
